Wound Care Biologics Market Growth, Share, and Business Statistics

Wounds, in which the epidermis is torn apart and the deeper layers of the dermis are exposed, are one of the most-easily recognizable signs of a physical injury. Wounds can range from a simple skin abrasion to those that end up exposing the bone! Apart from injuries, wounds can be a result of surgeries and also certain diseases. The severe wounds, if not closed off in time, can lead to excessive blood loss and, ultimately, death.

Therefore, due to the increasing awareness about the dangers of unhealed wounds, P&S Intelligence says that the wound care biologics market will grow from $1.4 billion in 2018 to $2.0 billion by 2024, at a 7.0% CAGR during 2019–2024. With advancements in the healthcare sector, traditional wound care products, such as gauze, are being replaced with biologics, which are agents synthesized from living organisms. Growth factors, skin substitutes, and an array of cell-based, collagen-based, and enzyme-based biologics are now available for wound care.

Among these, skin substitutes account for the highest usage, due to their effectiveness in healing chronic wounds, which include pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), and venous leg ulcers (VLUs). Skin substitutes are made from human and animal skin, therefore possess an extracellular matrix structure, which allows the natural dermis at the site of the wound to grow back. In addition, there are several severe acute wounds that require skin grafting, such as those caused by serious accidents, contact with chemicals, and burns. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 180,000 people die of burns every year.

Those who live to see another day are often so badly hurt that they experience life-long morbidity and disability, apart from gross wounds. Similarly, more than 1.3 million people are killed in road accidents each year, as per the WHO. Road accidents are responsible for some of the worst wounds, which mandate the usage of biologics for their management. Apart from disability, such nasty wounds also have a drastic effect on people’s appearance, and with ‘looks’ becoming important in this world of social media and fashion, wound care is gaining even more significance.
